The Gauntlet - Part 1
Five Years Ago*
“Ouch...”
Victory Girl found herself sitting on the floor of the reception area of some big corporation in Bayside City’s commercial centre. The startled receptionist was still recovering from the shock. The others waiting there slowly backed away to the exits of the large cavernous room. There was shattered glass radiating in every direction from the window in front of her. She quickly looked around to make sure no one was injured by her rather dramatic but ungraceful entrance.
“Oh Victory Girl! I hope you’re not planning on running off! We were just getting started!” boomed a voice from outside.
She wished she could say something reassuring, but she knew that at least one of them was threatening some civilians on the street. As she leapt out the window, she quickly scanned the plaza below to find her targets. Right enough, two of them were moving in separate directions towards panicking passersby, She course corrected on her way to ground level and was moments from landing directly on top of her target when she was broadsided, sending her flying into a nearby store.
The screams in the plaza trailed off as the crowds ran off. She picked herself up from the heap of high fashion clothing she had crashed into. After they had used this tactic for the second time since this fight had begun, she was annoyed as hell. It was so stupid that she was annoyed it was even working. The two big guys were setting themselves up as bait by threatening bystanders. As she moved to protect the bystanders, the speed-type was attacking her from her blind-spot. She was certain as soon as the plaza cleared, they’d try to move to another populated area.
She followed the screams to a nearby street where they were now terrorising some cars. One of the big guys was moments away from smashing in the front windshield of a car when she saw the blur of the corner of her eye. As she made her way towards the car at full speed, she saw him trying to move into her blind spot. ‘I need to change my plan,’ she thought to herself as she saw the same set-up spring into place.
