Partners - Part 1

Five Years Ago

“Hey! Are you… alive?”

Her voice brings him back from the edge. He tries to locate the source but he can barely move.

“You’re back in the chair in case you’re trying to figure where you are. And I’m a prisoner here, just like you.”

He coughs and spits out the blood in his mouth. His body aches all over, but he’s loath to express it.

“They did quite a number on you. Are you alright? Can you even talk?”

“Yeah, I can talk,” he responds finally and feels another wave of coughing coming up.

“You don’t sound too good.”

“Yeah, probably because I’ve been their punching bag for a few days now.”

“So, how did you mess up?”

“Thought I could be a criminal mastermind. Come up with the perfect plan for the perfect crime. I hardly expected that blasted E-Division to be active so soon, much less intervene. The syndicate took a big hit and they blame me. Though I’m not sure how taking it out on me solves anything.”

“You’ve not really worked with the mob before, have you? They have strange ways of deciding debts and how to settle them.”

“You sound like you know them all too well.”

“I do actually. I’m in one, as we call it, ‘family’. They kidnapped me to get leverage on my father and now they are playing the shell game while they wait for daddy dearest to do what’s best for his daughter.”

“So I take it you’re in better shape than I am.”

“Of course! They can’t let anything bad happen to their precious hostage, else daddy will rain down hell on them. But tell me, how did your brilliant master plan go wrong. I thought going up against the E-Division was suicidal in the first place.”

“I had factored in five of them and prepared countermeasures. Turns out they added a few more to their numbers a couple of days ago, who hadn’t made a public appearance.”

“How did your plan factor in five and not, say seven or eight? Guns are guns, right? Forgot to pack extra ammo?”

“No. I develop tech to counter Evolved abilities. When all goes well, you’ve got a 100 percent chance of success, but when things go wrong, especially in the hands of brainless minions who cannot adapt on the fly, it goes south 100 percent of the time.”

“Wait a minute. I thought you looked familiar. Are you that guy who blew up a R&D lab because someone pissed you off, killing everyone in it?”

“Well... That’s the story everyone loves...”

Though this falls within the VictoryVerse, its not a Victory Girl story per se. Not everything is about her!

This follows the events of In the Beginning and takes place approximately one year after the events in that story.
