The Gauntlet - Epilogue

Two days after the Announcement
“Prepare to be defeated, Victory Girl! We are the Elementals! Today, we will claim the title of the strongest!”

“Just to be clear, you’ve not issued a formal challenge and you know you are within city limits.”

“What the hell are you talking about? Now, prepare to be defeated!” yelled the leader as the four powered up.

“Ignorance of the law excuses no one,” says a visibly annoyed Victory Girl, her fist extended in front of her. She flicks her fingers in one motion, sending all four, who were standing side by side, flying into the solid brick wall right behind them.

Five days after the Announcement
“Breaking news! Police snipers took down two Evolveds who were terrorising the city’s northern residential district. Reports claim they had come to challenge Victory Girl. As in keeping with the new rules laid by the authorities, police took swift and decisive action against the two miscreants, keeping collateral damage to a minimum.

According to sources, the two were rushed to the hospital but are not in critical condition. They will be prosecuted as soon as they are discharged. Victory Girl, was at the time, helping fire officials combat a blaze in the other part of town. Stay tuned for our report on that.”

Ten days after the Announcement
“The city today got a first hand view of her champion fighting a duel. Local martial artist, Jade Tiger was the first to issue a formal challenge as highlighted by Victory Girl a more than a week ago and was the first to have a go at the superheroine.

The two fought hand-to-hand and no clear victor emerged when the Jade Tiger’s teacher called the match to a halt. Victory Girl was all praises for the young fighter's combat prowess and has even invited her to visit her at E-Division.”

Nine hundred and ninety nine days after the Announcement
“Prepare to be defeated, Victory Girl!” Boomed the voice on the speaker. The cheering crowd was going wild.

“You know we are within city limits…”

“But we issued a formal challenge! And besides, there’s no karaoke bar in that barren piece of land you call a battlefield!” yelled the frenzied host. “Now, meet your challenger! The one, the only, the Fairy Diva!”

The over enthusiastic little girl, dressed as a fairy, came on the stage beaming with joy. “Hello Victory Girl! I’m so glad you could make it! It’s my birthday you know! Now prepare to be defeated by my awesome voice!”

“You know, when I said I’d meet any challenge, this wasn’t what I was referring to…”

“Then I win by default!”

“She’s a huge fan of yours!” said her mother, “This would mean the world to her.”

“Fine. What are we singing?”

“I will survive!” yelled the little girl.

“Aren’t you a little too young for that song?”

“Mommy says it’s empowering!”

Victory Girl casts a side-wards glance at the mother who can only shrug and grin sheepishly at this point. “Why didn’t I suspect something was off when the challenge said that the Fairy Diva would bring down the house and slay the audience...,”. mumbled Victory Girl to herself as the prompter flashed, asking the participants to get ready.
