0.4 A Meeting of Minds - Part 4

He fully expected to see a light at the end of a tunnel, or perhaps being greeted by Lucifer. Would he look like Tom Ellis, he wondered. Why was he even wondering? Is one capable of thought in the afterlife? Is there an afterlife? The chain of thoughts brought him right out of his drugged slumber and into the tastefully decorated office of Dr Diablo. He instantly noted that not only was he not dead, he was also not restrained. As soon as he stirred, the tall plush office chair behind the desk rotated to reveal the Doctor. “Was he just sitting there, waiting like that for a dramatic reveal?” a skeptical voice in him inquired, before his eye caught the laptop that was now quickly obscured by Dr Diablo’s chair.

“My apologies old chap. If I knew who you were, I would not have treated you so shabbily. Please pardon my minions…” the doctor’s voice trailed off as he regarded the bewildered look on the Fixer’s face. He continued cautiously, “You are the former Chief Engineer and Head Designer of the now defunct ‘SubTech’, Mr … “

The Fixer cut him off before he went any further, “I don’t use that name any more. Please, call me the Fixer.”

“Excellent!” said the doctor as he leaned back in his chair. “A man after my own heart. One has to relinquish the baggage of the past and all its chains with society and civilisation if one is indeed to forge a path in these trying times. Once again, my apologies. These Neanderthals would not recognise genius if it clubbed them on their heads. To think that someone like you would come all this way to help me with a matter as trivial as a fluctuating power grid!”

While the Fixer barely got any respect within the criminal community, he was well known in the scientific community. That was of course, until the incident. Whatever version of that story Dr Diablo had heard, he was glad it had put him in his good books. “It’s actually worse than just a fluctuating power grid,” he replied with a serious tone.

“Hmmm, if you are taking it seriously, perhaps so should I. We shall discuss it over tea!” He buzzed for the hot beverage as he turned his attention back to the Fixer. “It would seem like a waste to have you all the way over here and not tap your mind. As you noticed last night, I have managed to get my hands on a most singular specimen of genetic potential. I have tried various protocols that I've developed over the years to get her body to tell me the secrets of her power, but the answers prove elusive. I fear I might have to get down to dissection to learn the answers. It would be a terrible waste to destroy a specimen like that, but I am running out of options.”
