Partners - Part 5

After getting patched up, the Fixer was moved to one of the Abels’ less known safehouses, where he had a couple of ‘bodyguards’ to watch over him. Nora visited him the next day, seemingly in better shape than when he met her. She assured him that they were there for his protection and not to make sure he didn’t try to run away, that as much as she’d love to work with him on this new ‘venture’ of hers, she did not want to compel him to do so against his wishes. He thought to himself that it was strange that despite knowing how dangerous she could be, he somehow trusted every word she said.

He didn’t hear from her for the rest of the week. He was feeling much better now, physically, but deep down, he dreaded being stuck with the mob, which is what would happen if he accepted her offer. His last ‘failure’ had left a terrible taste in his mouth. But on the other hand, he could not deny that she did have a most interesting plan for her new venture, which for him, mostly boiled down to being in a lab of his choosing. The… temptation was undeniable.

One fine morning, as he watched the winter sun rising, he felt he had finally made up his mind. His body had healed up from most of the beating he suffered at the hands of the mob. It was time. She had told him he could call her any time so, before he got any second thoughts he called her number. Her phone rang for a while, and his doubts grew with each consecutive ring, when finally she answered.

“Hey. It’s pretty early in the morning to be thinking of me.”

“Well, it’s more about your… proposition. I was thinking…”

“Hey, listen, I am so sorry. I won’t be able to go ahead with it. Something’s come up that will require my undivided attention. I know I promised, but, I hope you understand...”

“Oh, no, no, it's quite alright.”

“Thanks. Listen, it’s probably better we don’t talk for a while. I’m going to be… it’s difficult to explain, but… Tell you what. I’ll call you as soon as I’m done with this… business.”

She cuts the call before he can reply. A few minutes later, he hears the phone of one of his bodyguards ring. A few minutes later, he walks in through the door.

“We’ve got orders to move you to a location of your choosing. We’ll need to leave at once. Ms Abel has asked us to give you some cash to cover you for a few days. She says, unfortunately, that’s the best she can do for now.”

“Like, right now?”

“Yes. We’re getting the car ready. We’ll grab a bite on the road. Meet us downstairs in 10 minutes.”

He could not figure out what was going on, but he knew better than to disagree. They grabbed breakfast at a roadside diner on the way back to the city. They stopped by a shop while one of his bodyguards made a few purchases. As he had requested, they dropped him off at a discreet location where he handed him some cash and a new phone. He was about to make his way back to his old apartment when he felt it was no longer safe there. As he wandered off trying to figure out his next move he spotted a newspaper stand. He had not read one in what seemed like ages. The headlines of that morning made his heart sink to the pit of his stomach. ‘Abel Cartel Head gunned down in Late Night Shootout’.
