In the beginning - Part 3

The Fugitive

Stupid flame caster... Arm took the brunt of it... I better give it a few minutes to recover... I’m out of practice... Got lucky; there were no helicopters around... or that getaway would have been problematic... I just hope all of this dies down and goes away soon...

Except it doesn’t. It explodes like nothing before. Suddenly, everyone was abuzz about the new ‘superheroine’ who beat the odds when all else failed. I had to go save the most vocal little kid in the whole world. She couldn’t stop gushing, and the channels lapped it up. I was in the middle of deciding where to vanish to next, when I heard the next worse thing. They had given me a name. Somewhere between a child’s joy and a reporter’s need to name and identify, I got named. I look back at the calendar I keep. It's well past the deadline. It’s all uncharted waters now. And the world is going to hell. Seems like I’m going to have to step out of the shadows I love so much.

The trip to the capital is boring. I keep trying to avoid eye contact, hoping no one recognises me from the footage that’s playing on the screens. I find a place to crash. The television news is blaring. People are still talking about it. The ‘name’ keeps getting tossed around. The little girl and some ‘designer’ who was inspired by my exploits have given me a symbol. I see a little more of myself vanish. The room’s silent now, except for the odd vehicle passing by. Tomorrow, it all changes and all of this ends.

It’s morning soon, and I know it's going to be a long day. I put on the clothes from that day. Anything to aid recognition. Some time later, I find myself in front of the White House. I fly over the gate as gracefully as I can and raise my hands as I wait patiently for all the security who’ve scrambled to catch up. Finally, after all the barking of orders and threats, I say, “Take me to your leader…”

So, the next part is a bit shaky. I'm no legal, political or legislative expert (and I'm not even sure if those words overlap or mean the same in the context of things) but that's a bridge to cross tomorrow
