In the beginning - Part 1

Six Years Ago

Part 1: The Spectator

The neighbourhood was abuzz with the sounds of police sirens and screams. I made my way in the other direction. This was not my problem and not my fight. The authorities could figure this out. You think that people would welcome people with super powers, but this world took a strange turn. Nothing unites a people like a common enemy, but there wasn’t one. So they fell on each other. Those who got these gifts and wanted to make a difference were shunned and those got the same gifts, but wanted to take what they felt society owed them, well, the law was swiftly finding out that police and guns may not solve every problem. That’s when a loud scream pierces my thoughts. It’s a kid, a little girl probably. Did she get injured in the crossfire?

The cop on the bullhorn almost instantly answers my question, “Release the girl and you won’t be harmed.”

“Forget it, copper! Arrange for transport for all of us and maybe we won’t roast our little hostage!”

The sense of cockiness in the kidnapper's voice instantly gets on my nerves. I ask a bystander what’s going on. “Six of those… creatures have taken a little girl hostage. Snatched her right from her mother’s arms! Now, they are threatening to…”

I move forward before she finishes her sentence. I can see the cops getting tense. It’s one thing to handle one of them, but six, working together; that’s got to be a first. Usually, their egos don’t allow them to do so, but these six decided to break that trend. I’m at the police perimeter. “Can you take them without harming the little girl?” I ask the cop holding back the crowd with all the authority in my voice. His eyes are fixed on the scene unfolding in front of him, so he doesn’t really look who’s asking.

“I don’t think so, ma’am. They’ve got a telepath who’s warning them of our every move and then, there’s the speedster, that flame guy. The guy... Hey! Who the hell are you, young lady, now get back. It’s not safe here!”

Just my luck, he turned around before I could get all the intel. I make my way around to the other side. By my estimate, the big guy holding the little girl must be a strength or a durability type. I expand my awareness. There’s an earth-type around too. The speed-type is staying out of sight as is the telepath. Probably staying hidden to keep the police guessing.

I really shouldn’t be doing this. 'Evolveds', as they started calling themselves, are banned from using their powers. The last thing I need is the spotlight on me. I could do without the attention. I really should keep a low profile. But then again, they really should NOT have threatened the life of a little girl.

So, my first attempt at world building! And backstories! Unlike my more humorous fare, this one is serious. I don't like to think of the VictoryVerse as a sitcom or a drama or sci-fi. It's more slice of life but within a superhero universe, wherein one day may be full of laughs and lighthearted antics and then, on another day, you've got to get serious to get the job done. And of course, at other times, kinky fun.

I had roughed these out in my head back when I wanted to create a new character because I'm a bit obsessive / compulsive and everything needs to be in place and make sense in my head before I can even start writing anything.

I'm still a bit sketchy about the whole timeline thing. I've currently pegged this as six years before the events of The Session. I can manage a sequence of events but to put them in a time-frame makes my head ache a bit I've tried to put a few pins in the timeline with these stories and as I write them, I might get a better idea of how to space the events. So for now - as they say in sci-fi - the timeline is fluid.
